QCB · Qatar Central Bank

Qatar Central Bank (QCB) is the state authority that regulates and supervises banks, exchange houses, and payment systems operating in Qatar.

What it means

QCB is Qatar's primary financial regulator, established to oversee monetary policy, banking supervision, and the stability of the financial system. It licenses and supervises commercial banks, Islamic banks, exchange companies, and payment service providers operating within Qatar. Any bank or remittance provider legally serving customers in Qatar must hold a QCB licence.\n\nFor cross-border payments and money transfers, QCB sets the compliance framework that exchange houses and banks must follow - including anti-money-laundering requirements and consumer protection standards. If you are sending money from Qatar, the provider you use is a QCB licensee and is accountable to QCB for how it handles your funds and the fees it charges.\n\nQCB also governs the Qatari riyal (QAR), which is pegged to the US dollar. This peg is managed through QCB's monetary policy tools, giving the QAR a fixed exchange rate against the USD. For expats, this means QAR-to-USD conversions carry no floating-rate risk, though onward conversions to other currencies - such as Philippine peso, Indian rupee, or Egyptian pound - carry standard FX market risk.

Why it matters for Gulf-based readers

If you live and work in Qatar and send money home, every licensed exchange house or bank transfer service you use operates under a QCB licence. Before using any provider, you can verify its licensing status via the QCB official website at qcb.gov.qa. Using an unlicensed provider offers you no regulatory recourse if a transfer fails or funds are delayed.\n\nWhen comparing transfer costs from Qatar, the QAR-USD leg of any corridor is insulated from exchange-rate volatility by the dollar peg - but the second leg (USD or QAR to your home currency) is not. Always check the FX rate your provider quotes at the exact moment of transfer, not a mid-market rate published earlier, to understand the true cost including any implied margin.
